Pakistan: remote sensing to forecast floods

Remote-sensing-based climate and flood warning technology is to upgrade flood management of Pakistan. The project will help build the capacity of Pakistan Meteorological Department and other agencies responsible for flood forecasting, early warning and management at the national, provincial and district levels. UNESCO, with the financial assistance of Japan, is introducing the system at a cost of 3.5 million dollar. The system is expected to be completed by 2013.

 
The International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM): new opportunities for scientists, engineers, managers, and planners to engage with UNESCO

We have just received a new article about ICIWaRM, the International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management, which operates under the auspices of UNESCO. It is written by Robert A. Pietrowsky, Eugene Z. Stakhiv, and William S. Logan, USACE Institute for Water Resources.

 
A World of Science April-June 2011

The April–June 2010 issue of A World of Science, UNESCO’s natural sciences quarterly newsletter, is available. This issue contains background information on the floods in Pakistan. UNESCO’s work here has been triggered by a coordinated action of the Pakistani Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, together with the Secretariat of the Netherlands IHP Committee, in close coordination with Dr Gretchen Kalonji, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences. The webpage on mapping of Pakistan’s floods proved helpful to many people.

 
11,000 copies of water DVD for Indian water experts and students

Gurgaon, 14–15 March 2011 • 11,000 DVDs on «International hydrology and water resources» for Indian water experts have been launched at the international workshop «Adaptation and Mitigation Options for Tackling the Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources» at ITM University, Gurgaon, India.
